Just thought I’d through it out here for everyone who wants to share what they read and recommend, not necessary occult related. I just finished two books by Peter Watts Blindsight and Echopraxia. Both are fascinating sci-fi explorations of a question “What conscience is good for?” set up in the near post- and trans- humanist future. Although I liked Blindsight a lot its sequel Echopraxia totally blew my mind! Since I cannot write book reviews worth anything I’ll just throw some blurbs from others I think are fitting: " Blindsight is an astonishingly dense and philosophical novel; unflinchingly dark, unashamedly literary, and unapologetically couched in scientific language and thought.” “ A paranoid tale that would make Philip K. Dick proud, told in a literary style that should seduce readers who don't typically enjoy science fiction. ...” Kirkus
“ Echopraxia is science fiction on steroids— or better, on some intensely mind-bending and energizing drug that hasn't been invented yet.” LA Reviews of Books

(This is off-topic for "Anything else Golden Section.", but I don't feel the least inclination to quash it - and do feel some to thank you for creating it. I'll consider making an "off-topic" subforum and keeping it as long as it doesn't prove a threat to the main subject - which I don't expect from this post. Maybe sorry for the tone, but I wanted to make this transparent were I to reply.) "I cannot write book reviews worth anything" - I fully believe you, but you can change that! (I'm considering doing so regarding myself.) I might write something specific to this thread at some time, but for now I'll say that you'll definitely hear from me about what I read (I already listed blogs and reading lists) at my blog: deketemoisont.dreamwidth.org/ - which definitely won't be an "occult blog" because I'd like to spend at least some time writing about things I *do* know something about! Regarding your recommendations, I'm not sure whether they are more or less relevant for me given that I'm really not quite clear on what consciousness *is* - I probably ought to ask JMG and Wikipedia their opinions some time, then some other sources!

@ Dekete moi sont: it is off topic, and thank you for considering creating an off topic section. I just thought that sometimes when people studying the same subject share what they currently read, it could, in some strange ways, lead to unexpected but fruitful directions. I’d never expect to find myself here just by reading ERE forum, but here I am I never intended this thread to be any sort of discussion though, just a reference list with short blurbs for anyone who’d be interested. But I completely understand if you decide it is too off topic and detracts from the main theme and delete it. I should have asked first. Sorry about that. P.S. Just occurred to me that I should have posted it my *personal* space in Introduction. How can I move it there without messing up the board?

Off-Topic section created, thread moved, everyone discuss away as much as you want.
Thanks, alifelongme, for making this thread - I do think it was a good idea!

Huh, the same friend who turned me on to JMG has also strongly recommended Blindsight, and it's been sitting on my electronic bookshelf for years now, so maybe I ought to get to it soon! Let's see, non-fiction-wise, I just finished The Well and the Tree by Paul Bauschatz, which I wrote up in some detail here. Before that, I read Idhun in Myth and Poetry by Maria Kvilhaug, which was fascinating and full of good insights, but also clearly just the transcription of some Youtube videos lacking much editing/re-organization, which was frustrating. I'm about to start The Varieties of Religious Experience by William James, which was already high up on my "to get to" list, but now is also a requirement for the Universal Gnostic Church minor orders, which I'm working on as part of the Modern Order of Essenes. For fiction, I just read the latest books in Marshall Ryan Maresca's Maradaine series. It's a big, sprawling fantasy series that isn't overly marred by its implicit religion of progress assumptions transposed into a fantasy world. I've also been reading some comics - a few one-offs in the Hellboy universe ( Bones of Giants, Sword of Hyperborea) and now a graphic novel adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Snow, Glass, Apples, which is an variation of Snow White. But what I've really been reading the last week with most of my spare time has been two blogs: Postcards from Barsoom and The Last Psychiatrist. The former was linked to by someone on the latest Ecosophia open post, and the latter I had bumped into a few times, but @dekete moi sont recently drew my attention back to it. "John Carter" of postcards maybe veers further into the (insert adjective)-right and conspiracy culture than I would, but is an entertaining writer. The Last Psychiatrist is also humorous, but has brought about some uncomfortable reflection that seems to complement my spiritual work nicely. Thanks for starting this thread! Jeff

Re-reading Ted Chiang’s Stories of Your Life and Others and Exhalation: Stories. I read them when they just came out but now, that I’ve dipped my toes in some occult literature, they reveal different dimension I did not noticed before.
I have no problem visualizing, but coming up with different particular examples of an abstract concept is a struggle for me. I think it is a lack of imagination on my part. So, I hope these stories will add to my library of examples and help develop my imagination somewhat
